Ideas Take Shape In OneNote
Microsoft | Role: UI Designer | Project Length: 18 months
With Microsoft OneNote, users can easily organize information, share, collaborate, and take notes. OneNote is a powerful note-taking tool predominantly used by teachers and students. One of my main responsibilities on the team was spearheading the visual design for OneNote online and fluid design. The goal of OneNote online was to strip away the preexisting UI and create an interface that is easily accessible, intuitive, and user-friendly. Some of the new features on OneNote online include drag and drop, favorite your notes, filter your notes, suggested collections, and note sorting. For the redesign, I created the color palette, grid systems, type ramp, intricate card system, and icon design. I worked closely with UX, motion, and engineering to ensure the concepts were on brand and strategically sound.
Sticky Notes
Keep Track Of The Small Things
Need to remember something for later? Microsoft Sticky Notes can help you out! They provide a quick way to take a note so you can stay in the flow. With Sticky Notes, you can create notes, type, ink, or add a picture, add text formatting, stick them to the desktop, move them around there freely, and sync them across devices. I addition to light Sticky Notes, I also created Sticky Notes for dark mode. This was a feature that our customers specifically asked for and we listened! Dark mode not only gave sticky notes a fresh update, but it also helped differently-abled users better use this feature with ease.
The Impact Of Dark Mode
Creating the entirety of OneNote in dark mode was one of my main accomplishments while at Microsoft. I worked closely with the accessibility team to make sure each feature passed accessibility with a minimum grade of B-. Contrast ratio isn’t the only tool we implemented for differently-abled users. We also created speech and keyboard navigation and speech descriptors for all design elements on the page. The new color palette was not only high contrast but also beautiful in dark mode. This feature was very successful and we raised our accessibility grade from B- to A-.
Think With Ink
Add some character to your notes. Take handwritten notes and convert them to typed text later. Highlight what's important and express ideas with colors or shapes. This feature gives your notes character and helps scan information faster. Analytics saw a rise in customer engagement when this feature was implemented.
Take OneNote With You Everywhere
OneNote is cross-platform and easily accessible on all devices. Each experience is tailored to be used with ease from any device. It's easy to pull up your content from anywhere, even if you're offline. Start on your laptop then update notes on your phone. OneNote works on any device or platform.
